Depression and Physical Activity

Physical Activity and Exercise has been associated with decreased depression and increased feelings of happiness and mood. Unfortunately, Depression is a disabling illness that affects a large amount of people every year. In addition to Psychiatric and Pharmaceutical methods and strategies, physical activity can certainly contribute to the above mentioned strategies for a more effective treatment.

In a recent study, researchers found that physical activity and exercise can be an effective add-on strategy to conventional treatment. From their results, they found that aerobic physical activity and exercise was associated with decreased feelings of depression and increased quality of life. Also, exercise and physical activity was most efficacious when it met the public health recommendations of at least 30 minutes of activity on most or all days of the week (Dunn et.al, 2005)

However, do not assume that aerobic exercise is the only type of exercise that is associated with decreased depression. Yoga, weight lifting, gymnastics, Tai Chi, Kettlebell, Sports; the possibilities are endless! Remember, exercise and physical activity are so much more enjoyable if you pick something you are interested in!

So, when Depression hits full force, remember to move your body!
